Thanks everyone for your help.

Helen thanks, I had not added the two you mentioned as I have not seen them on any certificates of mine, so I assume the branch of the family I am following were all Presbyterian, aside from one girl who married in a Cafe according to the forms of the Christian Brethren.

Thanks for clearing it all up! Have a great day!

I think folk just went to the nearest church to where they were living to be married. Not all were married in the actual building but the minister would have performed the ceremony according to the rights of the particular church.

Don't think the choice of church was a deliberate act unless you had a leaning towards a particular branch of the presbyterian church.

Don't imagine it would have caused upset in the family.

Others not included in your list:
Baptist
Congregational

They are all presbyterian. The latter two are the same - the Church of Scotland was the established church.

They all lived in the same part of Scotland so I wonder if it caused them angst at the time!

It just gets hard to keep a track of which church belongs to which type of religion!

Thanks for your help.

It appears they are breakaway churches from the original Presbyterian

Would anyone be able to explain what kind of Churches the following are in Scotland, ie are they Presbyterian etc.

The Free Church of Scotland
The U.P Church
The Established Church of Scotland
The Church of Scotland

I am not sure if they are one and the same? They are shown on the marriage certifcates of a lot of my ancestors and I'm just trying to work out what's what!

Thank you.
