Hi I have recently found a new member of my family tree, and I was just wondering is there any way, possibly free, that I could find out if he was involved in the first world war? and what date he joined etc? I know that he didnt die during the war, but it would help to know as I was trying to look for possible children of his.

Thanks Steph

Doesnt quite match your criteria of free, but try ancestry - they have WW1 records. We found my wife's grandfather on there.

Ahhh, how do I go about searching on ancestry? Its still a bit new to me?

I have only subscribed to the 14 free day trial.

Thanks!
Steph

Steph, I assume you still have some Ancestry time left? Run cursor over "search" box at the top, a menu will drop down including military. Click on this and start your search. Hope you have an unusual name, but either way good luck!
Remember, if stuck you can also ask for help on here, but you are right to try to do this yourself to start with, much more fun!

PS be sure to cancel trial in good time

About 70% of the army service records and pension records got burnt during WW2, but most service men got at least one campaign medal, and these medal cards are intact.
