I have just obtained the marriage cert for the person I think/hope is my great aunt. Her name was Jane Mawdsley and she married William Taylor on 9th November 1881. I have found her on the 1881 census living in the household of the man who is named as a witness at the marriage.

She was born in Kirkby and married in Wigan, not too far from her place of birth. William and Jane did not have any children that I can find and by the time of the 1891 census a Jane Taylor is living wirth her sister , my great grandmother, in Bootle and is recorded as a "widow".

My problem.... is there any way I can be sure that this marriage cert is for my great aunt???

Well, it seems to me that there can't be too many Jane Mawdsleys, with the same father, marrying in about the right place! On the face of it the marriage cert sounds good.
Is it really the marriage cert you are unsure of? Or the census?

The name Jane Mawdsley and the name of her farther, James, is quite common in the Liverpool area, but what is giving me doubts is having no children to act as backup. This side of my family has been a headache from day one as granddad did not tell anyone very much about his life prior to his marriage in 1897, so I am swimming in a very dark ocean.

Yes, maybe I am being a little too cautious, but then we have all at some time taken something as true without adequate proof.
