I've got a group of ten in my family (great-great grandad and siblings) who were named as follows:

1. George (mother's father)
2. Margery (father's mother)
3. Joseph (father's father)
4. Martha (mother's sister?)
5. Ellen (mother's mother)
6. Elizabeth (father's paternal grandmother?)
7. John (father?)
8. Ellen (the first Ellen died)
9. William (mother's maternal grandfather?)
10. Elizabeth (the first Elizabeth died)

Interestingly, the father and mother of these children were John and Susannah (John's paternal grandad was also John and Susannah's maternal grandma was Susan).

Naming Patterns in England, 1700-1875

First son was named after the father's father.
Second son was named after the mother's father.
Third son was named after the father.
Fourth son was named after the father's oldest brother.
Fifth son was named after the father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother.
First daughter was named after the mother's mother.
Second daughter was named after the father's mother.
Third daughter was named after the mother.
Fourth daughter was named after the mother's oldest sister.
Fifth daughter is named after the mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister.

But something to bear in mind is where a child dies and another child is given the same name later...If, say, you haven't 'found' the first child yet then it may throw the pattern out.

And of course they may not have followed the pattern anyway!!

Hope that helps
Chris

After years of research, I now feel that it is more likely to be the modern parents who name their first son after the father - in case there are no more sons! In past generations, when families were large, they knew there would probably be more at some time or another, so they didn't seem to be in a hurry to name the first one after the father, and very often favoured a grandfather instead.

These days, so many families are smaller in number, that where they want the name to be carried on, the first one gets it to be sure.

Trying to find the parents of Samuel Timmins, born 1814 in Sedgley parish Staffordshire. The LDS site lists a Samuel born in 1814 to Thomas Timmins and Mary. The problem I have choosing this Samuel is that neither Samuel nor his sons nor grandsons named any of their boys Thomas. He did name his oldest daughter Mary, however. He did have a Joshua and a Benjamin and his grandsons also had Joshuas and Benjamins. The Timmins families that I am sure of seem to
hold pretty closely to the naming conventions.
Also, could someone give the naming convention to make sure I have it right? I believe it starts with oldest son after wife's father etc.
Thank you,
David Timmins
