I googled the name of the boat my dad was on during the war and boy but was I lucky, it gave, by date, where the boat was and what duty it was on..

.ie....17th October 1944, Under attack by 12 torpedo bombers which were repelled by aircraft......2nd August 1944, Sailed from Portsmouth as escort for HM Battleship RAMILLES during passage to the Mediteranean,

I have a detail of when and where the ship was from the time my dad joined until he arrived back from the far east at the end of the war.

I was very disappointed with my dad's service record (cost £30). It gave me no information regarding the fact that during in WW2 he was shipwrecked and missing presumed dead, although I have the telegram telling his parents. Also nothing about where he was stationed, I got all that from tracking his ship on Google.

A waste of money.

I got my fathers records, as mum is still alive, I applied in her name and she signed the form,so it was free
Dad had kept lots of stuff, but the records were still worth getting, they detailed all the camps he had been in as a prisoner of war etc.

Ann,

I applied for my father's WW2 records a couple of years ago. He only served in the Home Guard in that war, but he still retained his original service number, but served under the umbrella of a different regiment.

It included lots of information, names, dates etc. The bonus for me was that it also included all of his WW1 service, from August 1914 to Feb 1920 I think. (I suppose the file was just added to during WW2.)

It was certainly worth the £30!

Thanks Gwyn and George

It's the Army and thanks for the website address I have had a look at it.
Apparently it's £30 for the Service records
I just wondered how much more there was in it. comparing it to Certificate of Service

Ann
which branch of the services are you thinking about, there is a bit of difference on what has been retained by each one.

In the case of the Royal Navy all service records prior to 1972 were passed to the person on their discharge, so the info they have retained is not a lot. I have my Dads record which he gave to me tells all about him

Here is the link to the veterans Agency re Service Records for the services, it may give you some idea of what they have.

Hope this helps

Not sure what's on a certificate of Service, but I know someone who applied for records of relative in Polish Army in Britain and the papers showed date of birth, names of his parents and siblings and birthplace in Poland. His father's occupation was noted and BONUS .......
There was a photo of the serviceman.

Has anyone applied for these and is there more information in them than in the Certificate of Service that was issued on discharge.
