There are BRAY folk in Knowstone in 1871.
Perhaps we can find his parent dying, ...or maybe he was illegitimate?

Thanks Dee! Since the name of 'Bray' seemed so 'normal' I didn't think it may be a spelling mistake!

Thanks very much; will have another look..

I haven't found a birth for George though.

Hi Gwyn,

Thanks:

1871 England Census
Knowstone, South Molton, Devon

Head: John Follett b abt 1825
Wife: Sarah Follett b abt 1830
Dau: Maria Follett b abt 1856
Dau: Polly Follett b abt 1857
Son: William Follett b abt 1859
Son: Charley Follett b abt 1860

KEEP CHILD: GEORGE BRAY b abt 1870

George does not appear on any later census reports with John and Sarah Follett although I haven't searched for the 'children' yet. I've done a quick search on George for later censuses but nothing jumps out yet!

Any help would be great, many thanks,
Kasey x

That sounds plausible.
Could you post a few names and dates of census so that we can see the record please?

Hello. It's probably a really obvious answer but what does 'Keep Child' mean on a census return? I have a census with various family members; Head, Wife, Dau, Dau, Son, Son and then 'Keep Child'. A much younger child (aged 1) than the others and with a different surname to the rest of the family. Am I right in thinking he's a foster child??

Thanks,
Kasey
