Well that's my theory out of the window then Vivienne - sorry.

Is it possible to get hold of the film of the burial records via the Mormon site to view at your local LDS church? IF there is an error in transcription on the NBI at least you know that you've checked yourself and are satisfied you have the correct date.

I have found her on the 1841 census with her Mother living in Stainton HO/107/1259/5 and on the 1851 census she is still in Stainton born Great Broughton HO/107/2383/152/5 plus I have her christening in 1791 from the register book of Kirby Broughton. As you say Jill is it an error on the NBI but the area is Stainton.

Have you found her in the 1851 census? Or the 1841?

When was she born?

Could there have been a transcription error on the NBI? Only I spotted this from 10 years earlier:-

Quoting from Mark Herber:

"Nearly all deaths were registered because from 1837 burial was only permitted on the production of a death (or coroner's) certificate, which confirmed that civil authorities had been informed of the death."

" ... from 1875 when the Births and Deaths Act 1874 imposed a duty upon those present at a birth or death to report it to a registrar. There were fines ... Despite this, some births and deaths since 1875 have not been recorded."

So, it's possible that no death cert was issued.

Was Nutt Martha's maiden name? If she was married, could her death have been registered under a maiden name or the name from a previous marriage?

sorry Jill

registration of all bmds was compulsory from July 1st 1837.

The problem was that the registration of births was left upto the Registrar to discover what births had happened and then to track down the mother. Many births went unregistered during thsi period. This changed in mid-1875 when the onus was laid upon the mother (or a person acting on her behalf) to go to the Registrar and register her baby's birth

The registration of marriages and deaths was upto the vicar/priest who conducted the service. He was supposed to send the information from the Parish Register at regular intervals to the local Registry Office. They then sent copies of the information down to the General Records Office which was then in London.

So it was compulsory to register deaths right from the beginning.

The problem is that all kinds of things can go wrong

......... maybe the priest forgot to send the information to the Registry Office

........ maybe the Registry Office forgot to send the information to GRO, or maybe it got lost on the way

.......... maybe the name got badly mistranscribed during one of the many copyings of the information.

Vivienne ....... your best bet might be an attempt to find the Parish Register for the place in which she was buried. You may well be able to find that on the I G I on www.familysearch.org ....... this is the Mormon site, but you do have to be very careful to distinguish between SUBMITTED and EXTRACTED records. Extracted records are taken from the official document, Submitted records have been sent in by (usually) church members, and are not often to be trusted. Certainly there is usually no backing documentation for them.

Also try Online Parish Clerks, or your county site

Registration of births and deaths was not compulsory until about 1865ish so maybe it was not registered.

(Don't ask me how they managed to bury people with certificates ... !)

May be she was registered under a different name - even a first name that was the correct one?

Could she have died somewhere other than Cleveland?

Deaths have to be registered where the death took place and not where the person is buried
