Sailor Coasting Trade

The coastal/coasting trade refers to shipping cargo (and incidental passengers) between British ports. The Formartine and Buchan Railway opened in 1861. Before that the only reasonable way to move goods between, say, Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Aberdeen and ports south was by sea. This trade only really largely vanished except for off-shore islands in the second half of the 20th century. You may have seen documentaries showing the opening move in the Battle of Britain in 1940 was German attacks on British coastal shipping in the English Channel. (I know it's not NE Scotland, but the fact that such shipping would be attempted at that time does indicate its importance.)

I don't know that one, I suspect it was someone who worked on the cargo boats which took goods up and down the coast. There were lots which moved coal around for instance.

is a good website for old occupations.

On the bar across the top of the page it has an extra link for Marine/Military occupations

what exactly does this involve? particularly in NE Scotland.

Sorry, I may be asking quite a few occupation queries today.
