You need to use Writable Cds.
Open your FTM and then click on File.
Select backup and then select writable CD option Make sure of course you have inserted the CD into the CD drive click on backup and it transfers the tree as a backup to the CD
Shirley
Ps this is how I do it on FTM 2006 version although I save mine to a memory stick

If youve got the ftm2006 (which I still feel is the best version of the lot), remember you also have the option to back up to cyber space - I think I pay about a fiver a year to put all my tree into cyber space storage. its saved my life twice now.

I also have it on cd, but its easier to click on back up to internet than look for your cd :)

You have to change it to Writable CD drive not the directory.

You should have the options

Writable CD drive
Internet Storage
Working Directory
Custom Directory

Hi Ron
I am way out 2001 but I did put some of my tree on cd about a year ago. I think that I probally need a new dvd drive because although it plays dvds it will not let me write.

JET, why dont you get a newer version. I think twr computing still have the 2006 v16 version for about a tenner including an ancestry sub.

To write to a DVD you need DVD burning software, to write to a CD which is all you need for back up files, XP has got its own CD burning software if you have a DVD drive it's almost certain that it's a combo so it will write to CD or DVD
