if you check the 1911 census, there is a Jane Hannah Wintrip in the same house as William Wintrip. They live in Durham. It gives Jane's birth year as 1876.

The GRO isn't the only place one can buy an m.cert - one can also buy it from the local registrar, or whoever now holds this Chester le Street register (i.e., Sunderland rego office). Some local registrars have their indices (partially) online - see:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php?form_action=local

The gateway we need here is:
http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/

You searched for:
Marriages for the period 1901-1910: Surname = 'wintrip' and Forename/Initial = ''.
Surname Forename(s) Year of Marriage
COOK Jane W 1905
WINTRIP William 1905

Some places, when you click on the order form, you get to see the local reference code - which can contain more info - it actually identifies the church/subdistrict where the event was rego'ed - sometimes there's a key, but not always. The local indices don't always have the same info as the GRO index - typically, they don't specify quarter (some only give a 5 year range), but some times there's extra info - e.g., Macclesfield deaths pre 1865 have age; Preston births pre 1911 show mothers maiden surname.

you can find some information on the 1911 for free.

You do have to register at the 1911 census site, but there is no charge to do that ...... you only have to pay for the credits to see either the transcript or the image.

Many people are getting sneaky, and you can work out who is in the household.

Go to the actual 1911 site (NOT findmypast!) www.fmpbsol.1911census.co.uk/

sign up

click on full person search

scroll down, click on Show Advanced Fields

follow instructions.

If you are lucky, you will get your person very quickly!!

To find if there is anyone else in the household with the same surname

Note the details you have found as to residence (eg Durham, Chester le Street)

go back to Advanced Fields

Remove the forename(s), birth age, birth place

scroll down to Location

Click on County

click on district

scroll down to Other Members of the Household

enter the forename(s) of the person you have just found.

click on Search.

If you are lucky, only the people you are looking for will show ...... otherwise you will have to do some more screening.

This at least lets you see who is living with who.

and as I said ....... it's free.
