thankyou! i'm thinking that Joseph and Ralph are cousins? possibly, but i just find it strange that they both had daughter with the same name who married the same name and had a child with the same name!

i think this is going to stump me for a while

There are 2 Ruth Briers registered in Auckland, one in 1863 and one in 1874 which gives you a birth for both girls.

I haven't got all the information, of course, but could Joseph and Ralph be the same person, e.g Joseph Ralph Pickering, known as Ralph?
Do you have a birth cert for Ruth 1874 or is that date estimated from the age given in the census? Census enumerators frequently made mistakes or wrote things down on scraps of paper before copying them on to the return, so the age of 7 in 1881 could be an error for 17 and she's the same Ruth who was 7 in 1871.
Just a thought.

i'm researching my late fathers side of the family, one name in particular "Pickering".

i have researched alot and now looking at Durham parish records online and trying to get further back.

I have the father Joseph Pickering b.1806 in Bishop, on the records i have found a Ralph Pickering born.1806 also in Bishop so took that as his brother.

Joseph's daughter Margaret b.1845 married Henry Brier and had 1 daughter Ruth b.1874 who is living with her aunty in 1881 aged 7

I have traced Ralph (1806) in the census and in 1871 his daughter Margaret (1842) is living with him but is married and her name is Brier! AND she also has a daughter Ruth aged 7!

i know noone can shed light on this but do i take it that Ralph (1806) and Joseph (1806) are most likely brothers? or is it just coincidence that two Pickerings both had daughters who married the same surname and had a daughter Ruth.

hmmm.
