Please, before I lose the will to live, do I have to answer obvious wrong matches, it takes me days to do so.

Annina

You do not have to do anything with any hot match if you don't want to!

They are suggestions as to who you could contact if you were interested in the person matched.

I rarely act on any of mine.

Thank you so much folks, I was worried about site protocol, but if that is ok it will save me going bald!!

If a match is only for one name then probably it's not worth even looking at, let alone contacting the other member. The problem is that the Genes computers only match names and birth years and have no way of filtering out mismatches of birthplace.

Annina
The Hot matches are produced by the genes computer ,they dont come from other genes members,
If you find a possble match then if you contact the tree holder of that match it will be the first contact they will have had ,
They havent had anything to do with the match being in your Hot match list
You can safely delete any matches that arent your family by ticking on the box on the right of their match and then hit the delete button at the bottom of the list . OR if you look at the match in detail click on the discard this match on the record.

... and if the number of first contacts I've had from hot matches is anything to go by not many other people follow up hot matches!

Hotmatches can take a long time to appear.I treat them as a memory jogger, only.
I prefer "tree matches" on my tree and "surname summary" which can be set for recent additions.

Hi Annina
Yes hot matches are a pain to delete but on a positive note I found 5 contacts on this last list and each one has given me added information.
Unusual I know but great to find. Also if you do not want to follow up on any surname if you add an * after the surname GR will not send any hotmatches for that particular person.

Best wishes
Rose

Hi Rose , me being thick ! but can you explain what you mean by putting * after a surname you dont want to follow up, were do you do this, i would love to know .I am also getting fed up with hot matches although i have had some positive feed back but i seem to do all the running and most never reply, also i get the same name repeated and some of my names have never ever come up.

Margaret
I have several Smith in my tree. They are of little interest, partners and all that.
They are entered Smith* which seems to remove them from hotmatches.

Would you believe it, had a look at my latest hot matches, some one with 5 matches so took a look they were names of my grandfather's family, so sent a message to the person who had them on her tree, BINGO her grandfather and mine where brothers I did not know about her grandfather as he was born 1902 I had not checked the 1911 census for them, she as a copy of my great grandparent diamond wedding report which was in the local paper, the family lived in Oxfordshire I am in Australia and my contact in Scotland, most hot matches a waste of time but you never know when you will get a hit.

Hi
I've had many replies from contact i have made through 'hotmatches'. Yes i ignore them if i'm busy but will continue to look at them . I've had photos, lots of new info, new people confirmed, near relatives found. I even had a first cousin i never knew about contact me through a hotmatch. It turned out we shared the same Grandmother . It just so happened that Grandmother had been married first to someone else .
