I have an ancestor who was actualy baptised Betsey....she turns up in adult life as Elizabeth on a census return, but I guess that could have been the enumerator's fault, trying to do things properly and guessing what her real name was.

I have Elizabeth's going all the way back thrrough my family, several in each generation.....they range through Elizabeth, Betsey, Betsie, Bess, Eliza and Lil.

This site is all about names and has a long list of familiar forms of Elizabeth:

From 'Pygmalion' by George Bernard Shaw:

Higgins: What's your name?
The Flower Girl: Liza Doolittle.
Higgins [declaiming gravely]
Eliza, Elizabeth, Betsy and Bess,
They went to the woods to get a bird's nes'.
Pickering: They found a nest with four eggs in it;
Higgins: They took one apiece and left three in it.
They laugh heartily at their own fun.
Liza: Oh, don't be silly.

An acquaintance of ours, christened Elizabeth, has been known as Betty for so long that people put B as her initial when addressing letters and so on.
