Canadian Birth?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I am researching Jane haddock who was born in 1855/1856

She Married John Wheldon in September 1874 in Durham.

I thought with a relatively rare name like that she would be able to find a birth record for...wrong.

However in the 1871 census she is shown as being born in Sunderland. As she is (as Jane Wheldon) in 1891.

However I've not seen the original of the 1881 census but the transcript says she was born in Canada

Is this likely? Also is there anywhere i can check Canadian birth records

It most certainly could be , I suppose the name could have changed but ther is one problem ,

In the 1871 census Jane Haddock 16 is shown a step daughter to John Crouch whose wife is Elizabeth

Thank you... I'll need to ponder some more!!

I thought I would check the original of that 1881 census but I can't find Jane Haddock born Canada.

Margaret, I checked the 1881 image and it does say born America, Canada

She was Jane Wheldon by then

Jeanette

You are officially a Genius!!

in Dec 1865 John Crouch Married Sarah Haddick

I can only assume she died between then and 1871 and he remarried again.

Still wondering why Jane says she was born Canada on 1881 census

I think she was born there as it also says North America in the 1861 census.

Maybe someone who didn't realize this filled the other Census's in hence the Sunderland entries.

Mark, so Jane's mother must have gone to America/Canada at some time if her daughter was born there. How intriguing.

I did look for a marriage but couldn't find one (assuming Sarah Haddick/Haddock maiden name was Winter as she is described as sister to Thomas Winter in 1861.)
