Finding a death in India

I have just discovered that my great grandmother died in India sometime between 1882 and 1891 ish!! Her husband was a sea captain. I have googled a bit to find out if there is a simple way of finding her death record but it all seems to be on microfiche in various places. Just wondered if anyone had ever done a similar search and whether they had any good advice on the best way to proceed. Many thanks

You can try the FIBIS website or the British Library family history search database http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/ Neither are complete, though. If not found there, then a visit to the British Library would be needed!

You could search the IGI to see if they have any related records. Someone may have submitted the info in the past, especially if they have Ancestral Files. This recently worked for me.

I just wanted to put an update on this thread in case this information may be of use to anyone else in the future. I had wanted to trace the death of my great grandmother in India. I followed the suggestion given to me of going on the British Library website http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/ . Could not find her when I searched so just sent an e-mail thinking this would not come to anything. Have just received a lovely friendly e-mail apologising for the delay in replying from the Asia, Pacific and Africa Collections, Reference Services in the British Library who have found the details of the death and burial in 1892. They also informed me that I can apply for a copy of the entry in the indexes for £18, which is fabulous. There was no charge for the search. Hope this may help other people in the future.
