I'm having trouble finding any details about my maternal Grandmother
Alice Carter b1891 but I don't know where .I have her marriage cert when she married my Grandfather Albert Parker in 1915 & her Fathers name was given as Robert (deceased). They were married in Wales but I don't think she came from there.Rumour has it that she was in the family way at the time! I've search all the census' but without a birthplace its impossible.
Any ideas please
Many thanks

Who were the witnesses to the marriage? could they be relatives?

Have you trawled through the 1901 census looking for all Alice Carter's of about the right age. Her father may have died before the 1901 so you may have to make a note of all the ones without fathers, or on their own as well. There may not be as many as you think so it could be worth a try.

Did she give her father's occupation on the marriage cert? If he'd been dead for some time it may not help much but again it could be useful.

You could always write to the GRO giving them what details you have - address at time of marriage (might be no connection to where she was born), father's name and occupation etc. They can do a three year search. It costs a little more than the normal cert - I think about £15. It also takes a few weeks to get a result but it might work.

Also, try and work out roughly when she was born. Her age at the date of her marriage - calculate a possible timespan by assuming (1) her birthday was the day before her wedding and (2) her birthday was the day after her wedding. That would give the longest timespan you will need and would help in your letter to the GRO so that they can focus on that time period.

First let me apologise for not replying to you lovely people straight away. I did in fact,I sat down & wrote individual thankyous to all of you but when I pressed the "submit" button I got the "page cannot be displayed" thingy & it didn't go through so rather than that happening again I waited 'til this morning only to find a message from somebody called Cynthia picking me up not replying ! I'd understand it if it was a few days (who is Cynthia?) Feeling a bit angry at the mo-like a naughty schoolgirl. I agree
its rude not to reply but I did try!

Anyway, I am really grateful for all your help & I'm following things up especially
Janet's Welsh connection suggestion. It did'nt occur to me that she could have come from Wales, she sounded a real Londoner to me!
Once again Thankyou I realy do appreciate your help
Regards
Brenda

ps Fingers crossed when I press submit!!!

Brenda - I only suggested the Welsh family because of the marriage. Do you know why they would have married there?

Hi Janet
Clutching at straws !! My Grandad lived in South Norwood Surrey but used to travel to Wales with his work apparently so he could have met her there. Mum is still alive but knows very little about her Mum unfortunately. I found an Alice in Pontypridd about the right age with mother also Alice on the 1911 census . Alice was a widow by then so that ties up but no father Robert to connect them to my Alice.
Just going to put the thinking cap on again !!

I do apologise Brenda, I had not meant my message to sound like a telling off; I was simply trying to make sure that you saw the replies. So many people miss out on the information found for them because they do not return to their threads.

Regards. Cynthia.

I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to look up the relevant electoral register? Alice might not be on it (female, too young) but other family members could give a clue - if with her family of course!!

That thought went through my mind as well Janet. I've just Googled Welsh Electoral Records but no luck yet. Perhaps if I put a request on the board somebody might be able to help or point me in the right diection

Brenda, I think this would justify a new thread, just to ask where the electoral register would be held. The relevant library should look for you, maybe with a small charge. Or you might get a kind member who lives nearby!
