If you're going to enter a pob, then this can be mistranscribed too. Also, don't assume the county was always present. This is especially true of big cities, like Newcastle, Manchester, etc. Also, don't assume the transcriber knows enough English geography to recognize Nland is an abbreviation for Northumberland, even though they're transcribing a Northumberland piece.

To take a specific example from the 1851 Scottish census, there are 616 hits with pob=Rosehearty (the standard spelling), and 646 hits for pob=Roseh*. I don't have a full Ancestry transcription, but playing guess-the-typo convinces me that 8 of the extra 30 are misspellings / mistranscriptions of Rosehearty, and 2 are of Ross-shire. I gave up on the other 20, but it does illustrate the point I'm trying to make, namely that it pays to use a wildcard character in the pob, maybe just giving enough letters to make sure most of the hits you get are relevant.

Jonesey

I have been browsing this morning and found this page and your very easy to follow instructions. Thank you for having the patience to do this. I will book mark this and use it for all the people I cannot fond in certain census returns, OH says at least it will keep me going for a few months!

Finally, can I print this info?
