To return to this subject: my tree is not at present in the public domain. I have however followed an Ancestry hint and contacted a lady in Australia who is most definitely, according to her own tree, descended from my great-great grandfather's sister.

She insists we are not related! Now I don't care one way or another but her tree shows that we are - she mumbles something about Ancestry's removal of bookmarks, can anyone help me out here?

Thanks to all helpers.

Helen :)))

Thanks Jonesy, mine all seem to be ag labs and servants, much like the ancestors of Parky....

Hi Jonesy, you are saying lots of what I am thinking.

When you update one of your trees, do you have to upload and transfer gedcom each time?

Wow, all these replies!

Thank-you everyone for your views. I think I probably will - although no-one has mentioned the downside I thought of, which is I have to subscribe for ever!!

Maybe I need FTM as well. Do you have your trees in lots of different places? At the moment mine is only on here.

Helen I have my tree on Ancestry and it is public. The only thing I make sure of is that I don't put any living people on it not even myself. I have never had any problems and in fact have had some really good contacts. Especially one in Australia. Between us we solved a big family mystery.

Most of the info I have put on Ancestry is in the public domain anyway eg BMD's and Census returns

Go for it. You can choose whether to have your tree public or private. The other thing you can do is invite family members to see your tree in full even though they don't have a sub to Ancestry. They can even see the census returns you have added.

If you don't want anyone to see your tree then don't load it onto Ancestry....!

Simples.

I'm thinking or uploading my Gedcom to an Ancestry family tree. Does anyone have any pointers or tips or even warnings?

Thank-you
