Oh thank you for the info. That might be possible.
Many thanks for your help. it really is much appreciated. I just feel as though it is a race against time, I really do not know why I have this feeling.

I don't know if this helps but I was a pupil at the High School from 1962 to 1967 and our headmistress was Gladys Holland. I believe she got married when she retired.

Hi Sox1, I have emailed you.

I have a contact who knows some folk who went to the Newtown school so will see if they get back to me.

Sox1 Can you confirm as to whether it is Holme or Holmes please? They are Ediths and Gladys's under both names. It may make the search a little easier.

Hi. Is the name possibly Holmes - with the s?

If Edith is in her late '70's now, she would have been born in the1930's not 40's. Any chance you could clarify any dates with your cousin in Michigan? Also, if you know her mother's maiden name that may help narrow things down a bit.

I googled this:

Wigan High School, Standishgate 1906.

Wigan High School for Girls opened on 27 September 1887 at 19 New Market Street. In 1892 a Kindergarten opened in the nearby Grammar School building. In 1906 under Wigan Education Authority the school moved to Standishgate, former home of Mr Henry Brierley. Early in 1907 the school moved into the 'Tin Tabernacle', a temporary building behind the School House. On 23 September 1916 the new High School building opened at Mab's Cross in Standishgate. More pupils meant the transfer of younger ones to Woodfield in Wigan Lane, which opened in 1920. In 1919 Mab's Cross was erected inside the school boundary, opposite its former site, as Wigan Lane was widened. In 1938 and 1939 the North and South Pavilions opened, providing four more classrooms. Three air raid shelters were built in 1939. Sports were played at Ashfield, Standish. The Elms in Wigan Lane was used as the Domestic Science Department and by 1945 160 girls moved to accommodation in St Paul's school rooms. In 1945 the new Education Act saw the end of Woodfield as a Preparatory School and fees at the High School. In 1958 the Bluecoat School premises in New Market Street were used for the post-war 'bulge' first year pupils, who lunched at All Saints Secondary Modern School. In the 1960s Wigan Girls High School moved to its new site at Whitley.

- apparently the site at Whitley was short lived - there is no longer a girls high school in Wigan.

but.......if Edith was only born in the 1930's and the school closed in the 1960's - she was very young to have been a headmistress which is why I am wondering about her date of birth.

Hi sox, I am a native of Wigan and use a site called Wigan World. There are message boards where you could ask the locals if they have an answer to your problem. It is free to join and easy to use. Good luck. Sandra

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.
I have recently found a cousin in Michigan.

And she has told me of a living cousin Edith. as was in 2004. But the last time my cousins late mother had spoken to her, was before my cousins mother died. in 2004.

My cousin in Michigan, over the years has lost all information on her. and so I would desperatly love to find her, if she is still about.

All I know is Her name
Edith Holme, born Wigan, still was living there.
She had a sister Gladys, who died a few years ago, Gladys was married to a John ?.
Edith would be in her late 70s. possibly have been born in the 1940s. Not too sure but we think her father was John. born Wigan.
She was, so my cousin told me, a headmistress of an all Girls school, in Wigan.
I have looked into this, but as usual have drawn a complete blank.

I would love to find her, or her brother in law.
I know she was a spinster, so you would think it would make it easier.
It would be such a shame to think, if something happens to her, and she is in a home, all photos and history would be binned.

If there is anyway anyone can help. I would really appreciate this.
I did find one John, but did'nt correspond with the history of my family, as a farmer, or the dates.

I did 192, and found 8 E Holme, And have written to all. but to no avail, sadly

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Many thanks
