Hi,

I have a relative called Thomas Johnson born c1858, I found him in the 1901 census which lists the place of birth as Helpley, Yorkshire which doesn't seem to exist.

I can't find any relatives before 1858 for this part of my tree because Helpley doesn't seem to appear anywhere else. Can anyone help? Is Helpley in anyone elses tree? Is Thomas Johnson c1858 born in Hepley in your tree?

Thanks for your help,

Vicky

Could it possibly be Helperby? It is between the A1 and A19 NE of Boroughbridge.

Thanks Keith in Fujairah and SomersetGirl.

There is a Johnson family in Helperby that could be a match but I haven't been able to make the connection Just yet.

Keith in Fujairah - Nice spot with the 1891 census, I hadn't found this one, I do know Thomas' spouse was called Sarah and their childrens names listed match with the details I have too!

Is it common to have different places of birth listed in seperate census records??

Thanks again for your help,

Vicky

Sorry my deletion above, double posted.
Vicky it is very common to have different places of birth on the census.

It would appear that they are still in Auckland in 1911, there is a Thomas Johnson b 1858 with a Morton Johnson b 1899, Ellen Johnson b 1897 et al.
Unfortunately I have no credits to check this is the correct family

Keith in Fujairah - Thanks so much for your help, from what you've said it is the correct family I have Henry c1893, John c1884, William, c1886 Morton c1899, Dulcener c1889, Mary c1895, and Ellen 1897 as children of Thomas and Sarah, Morton and Dulciner are slightly unusual names so it sounds like a good match to me.

Jean - thanks for your message, I have replied.
