I thought I might give this a go as I can't progress further with my tree.

Could anyone advise on how to start, keeping a check on where I've got and keeping records.

I thought it would be a good idea but think it could be quite daunting.

Dee
Is this for your own interest and hoping to find leads for your tree or were you thinking of registering your interest?
If you look at the Guild of One Name Studies site ( G.O.O.N.S. ) you can find out about the requirements re. information held,in order to register with them.

You could start by collecting instances of the surname in 'your' parish, then gradually widen your searches to surrounding parishes. You will usually be able to detect mini trees, which you may later be able to link into yours through reading Wills etc.
Beware, it's addictive!

Hi Gwyn

I have looked at the Guild of One Name Studies site, I don't understand what half of it means (I must be a bit thick!) lol

I checked to see if the name was registered but it's not. I'm quite happy to share info but wanted to do it as a hobby. I'm going sideways on my tree as I can't go back any further. I don't really want to add anymore twiglets to my tree, I get so many hot match people contacting me and it's a shame I'm so far removed from them.

Do you know of any software where I could store mini trees?

Sorry Dee.
Bit of a dinosaur here...
I know so very little about computers, software etc.

Can you not just work with whatever program you store information on at home, but not put the new names onto GR.

I wasn't sure if I could do that but it looks like I can.

Thanks
