There is a site called "ScotlandsPeople"......................think you will have to part with some money........................just type in the site, register and go with the flow.
There is also Ancestry.co.uk where you can get a 14 day free trial which is a big help and one I would recommend as a trial offer.

For Scottish records, you will have to go to Scotlandspeople.gov.uk and pay to search the records to try and find his birth.
If you know approx when he was in the Navy, you can try the National Archives Documents Online to see if his navy records are available to download.

Can anybody tell me how to find out more information about my grandad all i know is he was born in Scotland in about 1917-1920 and was called William Reid was also known as Billy Reid, Reid could of also Reed, he was in the Navy in 1938 Living in or near Luton in this year.
