Hi All,

I'm new to the family research thing and thought it would be a good idea for all newcomers to know where to search for information.

Please list websites, offices and any place you go to find information about your relatives.

Cheers, James

have nudged Heather's very useful tips for new members for you

but you can search any of the boards by keywords e.g. "tips" and find all the myriad threads already on this topic

there are lots of lovely people on GR who are happy to help, but we all appreciate it if people do a bit of work themselves first using free resources such as www.freebmd.org.uk, www.familysearch.org, google (yes its amazing how easy it is to find info on virtually anything if you google it)

Somewhere near you is a large building (could be a small building or even a van, but usually it's a large building). It's called a library. In there are lots and lots and lots of books. There will be at least one shelf of books on family history / genealogy. Pick a basic book, published within the last 10 years or so. It will list very useful websites etc. It will also tell you things about wills and tithe records and stuff available at local Record Offices too.

Go there. Read one. Come back in a week or so and ask a few questions. You may have a few questions but not that many.

Good luck.

Jill
