My great grandmother had a child 'out of wedlock' and went from a small village in Suffolk (where the family had lived for generations) to relatives in Grimsby to have her - hence the chld is registered in Grimsby.
G Grandmother then left the child with her parents and went into service in Hampshire.

Oh Bob, that's a sad story. So true - but sad.

It can happen that the birth is not where you expect.
My maternal grandmother was born, lived and died in Salisbury and appears there in every census but my mother was born in Deptford Greenwich at her aunts house.

It's possible that the registration did not reach the GRO so it would be worth contacting the local office.

It's also very possible that the birth was not registered at all.

My grandfather was born in July 1884. He was the youngest of several children - the first known child was born in 1875. Theoretically they should all have been registered. Nope. Not one of them as far as I can see.

I have even trawled through baptism registers at the LMA - found one ... who was aged about 6 at the time so fat help that was. And I still have no idea of mother's maiden name!!!!

I did read in a FHS mag that it's likely that if one child is not registered in a family then none of them are ...

The birth can be registered anywhere but it will be filed in the district of birth.
It is possible to give wrong information.
edit
I should have said, reported at any registry office but will be registered in the district of birth.

Does anyone know that in 1888 if a child was born in, say, Tower Hamlets, could the birth have been registered by Grandparents in Surrey?

Many thanks
