I have a very old copy of my mother's birth certificate which is very tatty and only just legible it contains the heading "issued for the purpose" then there is a bit missing underneath this is printed "child or young person" and then " certain statutory cases" would this have been from childrens home or worse? any help greatly appreciated I have bought a copy of the original and this is just a normal cert without any of this info on it

Karen,

It was probably obtained when the person was starting work. Often, if there was no original certificate, they were obtained to prove the person's age to an employer. (There is one in my family just the same.)

Don't know if this will be of any help but we have one from 1949 which is a copy issued for the purpose of Family Allowance Act.

Thankyou all, I was just concerned that it may be issued from childrens services fostering or something as she was unhappy at home

Thre should be a date the cert.was issued. This will allow you to work out her age,at the time.
Mine was issued when I was five years and nine days.
