Hello again folks

Thanks for the interest and information.I have been following up a family story about an ancestor ending her days in Taunton Workhouse, riddled with arthritis and liking a drop of the hard stuff to cope with life! My informant is full of such family stories but short on hard facts! I think I have found the death cert for the ancestor in question and am waiting for it to arrive. Then I will see where she died.
If anyone is interested I will keep you posted,in the meantime
thanks again for your thoughts.

cheers

Hi Mike....Google.."Union Workhouses" will tell you a lot.

There is a lot of general very good detail if you also Google
"Chesterfield union Workhouse"..don't worry about the Chesterfield bit..its an excellent site for anything you want to know about Workhouses.

Quinsgran,

That is a very good point. I found a Workhouse death for one of my late uncle's ancestors in 1900 and it later transpired she was living a (relatively) comfortable life at a nearby address immediately prior to being taken ill.

The workhouse was often the local hospital and does not mean they had to have lived there

any deaths would have been in the Workhouse Infirmary and these would have been registered in the normal way .I have a couple of certs where the rellie died in the Workhouse Infirmary.

Please can anyone tell me if deaths in workhouses were still registered as any other death and would therefore be in the BMD records?

thanks
