If a marriage was later found to be bigamous, a 'marker' is often put on the record on GRO and no certificate will be issued.
You can get round this if you know a likely church and can look in their registers for details.

Sometimes there were reports in the local papers, ....and sometimes the couple just got away with it, undetected.

Gwyn & DET

thanks for the info.

I've got a cert for the marriage in 1931 but my grandmother didn't divorce her first husband until 1944, so must of got away with it at the time but they married again in 1960's so thats why i'm asumming bigamous marriage

I wonder why the delay after her divorce....?
It was quite a while before they (re)married.
