Hi Lancashireann, Wow thanks so much for that.

I bought the magazine whilst away on a week-end break to read when we got back home, but I totally forgot about it as I was taken ill and still can't get out of the house, hubby must have put it somewhere 'safe' for me. I will get him to hunt for it now.

Thanks so much, ooh lots of lovely reading now too. what a bonus.

Thanks again, it's much appreciated.

Regards, Lou

There is a long article about travel documents in the july issue of Your Family tree magazine.
It states that a (incomplete) list of names of people issued with passports between 1851 & 1903 are available on FMP but it is unlikely that a copy of the passport can be found (except if you are very lucky in family papers) just the index cards now in michrofiche format. But it was not clear in the article whether the index cards applied to all passports or just those issued since 1898.

Hi, I know he worked in India for several years, and have a baptism record from there which states the father's name. Also some kind person on here found the passport no for me and the date of application, which was Aug 1853. He was working as a chief engineer on a boat.

Passports as we know today weren't introduced until 1915. There were however earlier primitive versions, mainly issued to diplomats.

What evidence do you have that your ancestor was ever issued with a passport?

Could some kind person tell me if it's possible to get a copy of a passport applcation from 1853 and if so how do I get it?.

I know my ancestor and his wife both applied for passports and I have the dates, I was wondering if it's possible to get a copy of their actual passport application to see if it could shed more info on them.

Thanks, much appreciate any help or advice,
Regards, Lou
