Margaret Report 5 Aug 2009 18:55

I've recently been trying to trace my family tree, but keep stalling on my maternal grandfather, Herbert Barber, who was 81 when he died around 1970, and lived in Ashton under Lyne, Lancs. My mum, who is still alive says he was born in Ashton, Her brother who died recently had his certificates, but his wife says she can't find them. I have found his marriage record to Harriett Long of Holmfirth in Oldham, in 1916, but have been stymied in my attempts to find a date of birth, death etc. He was a butcher when my mum was born, and she swears blind that he was always a butcher, and was the son of a butcher, all in Ashton, but the Census doesn't reveal anything in 1901, and I can't get anything after that, and there doesn't seem be any way of getting into another one after this date.
He was pensioned out of the first world war with a blown off foot if that's any help.
This is driving me insane!

Have you tried the Lancashire BMD site, Margaret? It's not completely done yet but he might be on there.

Failing that, you might have to check the images for B surnames quarter by quarter on Ancestry (if you've got a subscription) or FreeBMD in the deaths index around 1970. With a bit of luck, if he did die after 1969 his birthday should be on his death certificate.

Thank you all for your input. You are all fantastic. Now,how do I find out if this Herbert Barber was the same one as the one who married Harriett Long in 1916?
Also how did you get these results?

Kate Report 5 Aug 2009 20:01

If you get the 1916 marriage certificate, Margaret, it will give his father's name and occupation. Hopefully you'll be able to match him up with a Herbert on the census that way.

I think the census returns above must be from Ancestry - I think you would need a subscription for that - but the Lancashire BMD site I mentioned is free to search:

Maybe his birth year is one year out on death cert. You really need his marriage cert to be sure you have the correct family.

Barbara got the right family right at the start according to my Mum.
I don't seem to be using these websites very well. Could anyone guide me. The ancestry.co.uk one was one of those which I searched initially, but couldn't find anything. Barbara got every thing, and in such good simple detail as well. How did you do it Barbara?
I am now in exactly the same pickle over my Paternal grandmother, an Elizabeth Ann Foster who definitely died in Halifax in 1986 and whose birth was 18/8/1896 in Longsight Manchester. Facts gleaned from her death certificate, but can I find the right family on the census for 1901?, can I heck. What am I doing wrong, and what should I do about it? HELP!!

Hi Margaret ,

The info i found was the same as Barbaras but it was mistranscribed on Ancestry that was why you could not find them.
