Combining duplicate people on FTM

Thanks BrinsleyS,

I did have the problem with cousins you mention, when I found my Grandparents were first cousins!

What you say sounds very probable about some date or other detail being different. When I first received the tree from my relation I noticed on her tree that my daughters were also shown as my sisters! I can’t figure how that’s possible even with time travel!

I will have to go through both trees and edit all the duplicate people and ensure each has exactly the same amount of detail, and if that doesn’t work go back up the family lines, still it will keep me busy in the evenings while the missus watches Eastenders!

Thanks again,
Kind regards,
Mayfield.

It is possible for the same person to show up twice when printing your tree, even though they are only entered on the database once. It is quite normal - in some circumstances. For example, if there are multiple relationship lines within the tree, perhaps as a result of distant cousins marrying resulting in their children having two separate and distinct lineages back to the same ancestors.

However, It can also happen because you have inadvertently entered something incorrectly and created such a relationship in error. What you need to do is trace each duplicated line back up each of the two trees to determine where things have gone wrong. You may have a duplicate person back up the line.

As you said the problem arose after merging two tree, this is likely what has happened in your case. One or more people haven't merged properly, perhaps because there was a difference in birth year, or some other information.

Another thing to check is that the common part of your two tree's didn't have differences in certain of the relationships which has resulted in you having both lines in the merged version.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your advice, just as you said, I found 2009 has a similar “find duplicated” function, but unfortunately it didn’t show me as a second entry on the search list.
I tried the “merge individuals” but it just comes up with “related individuals cannot be merged”.
Strange because I and about 12 others show up twice on the tree but only once on the list of people.
I think perhaps I may try starting again and deleting the problem people from one tree before merging them again to see it that works.
Best wishes,
Mayfield.

I have FTM 2006 and it has the facility to merge 'all duplicated' or 'two individual' people.

I would think there would be something similar in your 'menu's.
Mine is under 'People'

Good luck
Chris

Can anyone please advise me?
I have my tree on a PC based FTM 2009. My relative has hers on web based FTM, I got her to send me a GEDCOM of her tree so we could merge them on my PC as her subscription expires soon.
The two merged ok except for the photos which I had to input again, but (isn’t there always a but somewhere!) several people show up twice when printing out a tree, for example I show up in dotted boxes instead of solid ones as the child of my father and mother but also show up as a separate child of my mother.
I tried deleting myself from just my mother’s record and also just my fathers record but both times I disappear completely.
It looks as though you should be able to combine people but I don’t seen to be able to resolve it.
Has anyone any suggestions please?
