I`ll try these publications, see if I get anywhere. I have seen about the Wellcome Library in other sites I have looked at, but haven`t got anywhere. Never thought about an info block on them. Thanks.

OK, thanks, will give these a try. Already spoken to Stratford library. They weren`t very obliging.

If you google "hospital plaistow london" the first result will give you the nearest hospitals to Plaistow. There is one missing though, Queen Mary's which closed in the eighties. Their records are held at

Stratford Library
3 The Grove
London
E15 1EL
England

Tel: 020-8430-6881
Email: [email protected]

I would try the Homerton Hospital first followed by Whipps Cross.

Good luck

Presumably Nursing Record and Hospital World is an old journal that has ceased publication and/or merged with British Nursing Journal

Thanks.
I have had a look at this site. Nothing under her full name. Lots under Miss Edwards, but its difficult to decide if any of the references could be her. I have emailed the London Hopsital again, as I found out their records cover St Barts as well, dont hold up much hope though. Dont know what they searched last time.
What is the Nursing Record and Hospital World. I googled it but got The British Nursing Journal back which is a current magazine.

I agree with Netty's suggestion of the website http://rcnarchive.rcn.org.uk/

If you go to this site click on 'search journals' under 'historic nursing journals' and put your great aunt's name into the 'exact phrase' box. If she's mentioned anywhere this should find her. The Nursing Record & Hospital World recorded lots of information about nurses and where they were working.

But be aware that some nurses may have been referred to simply as 'Miss X" (i.e. without the first name).

Thank you for your replies. I am new to the tips board, and had a bit of trouble getting back to it.

I did try the RCA, spoke to someone in Edinburgh. They charge for their search, so suggested I try other avenues first. She started her training at the Livingstone Hospital in Dartford in 1901, but I dont know where she went after that. There are no staff records for this hospital, I checked.

I do know she was involved with hospital work during the Blitz, apparently there was a newspaper piece written about her at the time, again I dont know what paper etc..... so she must have been in London, and my family seem to think she was around the Plaistow area. She didnt work at The London, they searched for her. No Record.

I didnt know about the Red Cross. I will give that a try. Thank you for all your help.

Not sure if this applies but the Red Cross hold records of nurses who served in WW1, may be a longshot

Info can be found by googling

Have you tried the Royal College of Nursing. Maybe they can help.

Can anyone help with any advice. I have been trying to trace any information/records on my great Aunt, who was a nurse. She started her training in 1901, and I have contacted the BNA and because she started her probationary training before the Compulsory Registration of Nurses Act of 1919, they have no record of her. I also contacted the BMA, the Stratford Archives, The Royal London Hospital Archives, The National Archives, I am just drawing blanks. I dont know where to go from here. I know she was in nursing all her life, and I believe she became a Matron, and retired about 1950. Any advice would be great. Thanks.
