Hi
I am trying to find a birth for Emma Porter born 1891 wood green london.

I have her on the 1891 census mis trans as Emma Pater age 3 but when you look at original record it show 3 months.

Then in 1901 she is with parents in southgate middlesex.

I can not seem to find her birth.
Thanks for any help. Sue

Hope I'm not stating the obvious, but how accurate is the 3 months? Can't remember the exact date of the 1891 census but she could have been born Dec 1890 and been registered in that quarter. Mind you, people don't seem to have been in any hurry to register in those days so it's only a slim chance.

Alternatively, have you tried parish registers, if available, for her baptism?

Hi
There is an Emma Louise Porter, born in 1888 1Q 1b 802, Holborn which spans the boundaries of London and Middlesex. Could this be her.

Thanks Allan for your reply.

The census in 1891 was april 5th.

You could be right so I will look at that quarter. Her parent were not married and her Mum was only 16 so maybe they didnt register the birth.

Hello again Sue

She should have been registered somewhere. Although registration was voluntary at first, it was made compulsory from 1875, and parents could be fined if they didn't register.

Thanks again

I will keep on looking.
