It seems my great-uncle left to be a fine, upstanding citizen in Australia - how do I go about finding more details than that?

thanks for any guidance, this is a complete gray area for me

It will be on most of the family history web sites under "Unassisted passages to Australia" or Unassisted passengers.

If you'd like to give a name and a date I can search for you.

If you like to do it yourself. Try Ancestry, or finding my past. Or Google the phrase "Unassisted passages Australia" and take it from there.

I must seem really rude replying so long after getting a response, but living family has to come first.

The information was very helpful as it helped shape the search I needed to make and I've discovered that emigration to Australia after the 1920s (my great-uncle was born 1924) was a Federal matter.

So, I still haven't found him, but I've taken a turn down a road.

Thanks very much

I'm hoping to meet his brother in the next couple of weeks for the first time. So I'm all a-flutter trying to get photos together to show him of other family members.

So fingers crossed

Try searching the National Archives of Australia. You may do it as a guest researcher. Here is the web site.

http://www.naa.gov.au/

Go into collection and then records search.

Then click on the Name Search bar (with the photo on it). When you get to that screen click on passenger index in the top right hand side.

This is good for people who came to Australia after 1921. Ignore the fact that it is centred in Fremantle WA. All ships coming to Aust stopped there in the early days.

Thanks very much - found him. He was in the record search because he served in the military between 1939 and 1948. May not have been exactly what I was looking for but I know I've got the right chap because his brother is listed as next-of-kin and still lives at the same address

Great. You have probably had a look at the info. You are able to access the documents to which that the entry refers. Just click on the control symbol and follow the prompts which will take you to an order form. If the reference already has the digital image icon on it you already have access to the contained info.

Hope that makes sense.
