Hi all /anyone! I have a bit of an update although I think it is now more of a dead end. We have found the short birth certificate and all it says is that my Gran's mother was a Mary Agnes Harvey. My gran was born in Woolaston House and Mary is a domestic servant of Clytha Square. My grandad confirmed that Mary had another daughter who came to visit my Gran 40 yrs ago, she came from Canada where she had emigrated to. Does anyone have any ideas where I could search next as I can not find any passenger lists to Canada online and the electoral roll for Clytha Square wont help as in 1923 only the male servants would have been able to vote! Help!

Kate,

St Woolos was also a parish in Newport.

There's a mention of St. Woollo's here - it looks like it was a workhouse and later a hospital. It's possible that Violet's mother went into the infirmary connected to the workhouse to give birth without actually being an inmate. Sometimes it was the only way somebody who couldn't afford a doctor or midwife could have medical attendance when giving birth.

Hi all, I'm after some advice from more experienced people than me (not difficult, I have no idea what I'm doing!) My gran was unofficially adopted in 1923 - by possibly a family member. She told my mum she would tell her all about it when my mum was old enough to understand (my mum is now 61!) Mum has with much pestering managed to ascertain that my Gran was born Violet May Harvey (apr, may june 1923), then became a Fortey (the family we all know) . My Mum has got a copy of her birth certificate showing that she was born in Newport - St Woolos in 1923 and that her mother was a Mary Agnes Harvey - she is listed as a domestic servant and there have always been rumours that my Gran's father was the Head of the House (oohh er!) My mum has managed to "mislay" the cert and we are waiting for a 2nd copy to arrive to confirm Mary's birth date. We've also now discovered that 40 years ago my Gran's birth family came to visit her but she will say no more. We think they then emigrated to Canada, while waiting for the cert to arrive I have a few queries; a) does anyone know if it's possible to trace people who've emigrated? b) does anyone know if St Woolos was a hospital / institution for unmarried mothers . Any advice would be great! Thanks, Charlotte
