on Ancestry, when you clickon a census year, at the bottom of the page is a list of county's and in that list you will see Royal navy,

for other vessels you need to clickon A county (Normaly where the ship would be registered) and then clickon the civil parish, (Vessel) that will give you a list of ships

When you clickon the description of enumeration district it will tell you where the ship was when the census was taken

Royal navy Ships at sea still had census's taken and most merchant ship also still did census returns.

If you look at the area where they came from and look under civil parish's all the vessel's will be listed

for Royal navy they are listed under and with the county's

One of my husbands relatives was missing on the 1851, 1871 and 1881 census. I believe he was a mariner/sailor so he must have been at sea at the time of the census'. I'm just wondering is there anyway to find out which ship he was on and when?

Thanks,

Janet
