I am looking at Thomas Marshall as above and on 1871 Scotland census he is living with his grandparents in Edinburgh, Canongate. His parents were marriedon 13th October, 1865 in Edinburgh but his mother Isabella McEwan is also showing on 1871 census under her maiden name.

I just wondered if anyone had a possible explanation.

Have tried to find Isabella's parents John and Rebecca on earlier census to check that there weren't 2 daughters of that name but no luck. They did move around as there children were born in Gibraltar (Ireland), Scotland and the West Indies.

The father of Thomas is on not on the census and Isabella does not appear again so I am assuming they both died and thats why he lived with his grandparent from a really young age. However my assumptions have misled me before.

At the moment I only have the records from Scotlands People. It says in the marriage register that he was a Corporals ? (can't make out the other word) but I know he was also a Cooper at some point. He was 24 when he married

When was he a cooper - do you have him on any census?

Does it give any indication of occupation of Peter Marshall?

Not from a census. It is on his sons marriage records = again the page from Scotlands People. He was deceased by 1890, that was the year his son married

It is quite hard to read but I think it says Peter is a Cloth Lapper

Thanks for your help last night. I would never have found that he had been a soldier.
