I am helping a friend whose father came to Australia as a young man just after the second world war, to try to get some family history together. She knows a little of the background but I was wondering if anyone knew any, good sites in English, for German geneology.

Online Heritage Books at Genealogy.net is good - it has lots of parish records, all lineage-linked, with an English language translation for many pages. Coverage is by no means complete, but you might get lucky! It's free, too:
