Eek ! I have just found out that an ancestor of mine was in Northampton County Gaol in the 1851 census. It looks like her husband died and she obviously did some ill-deed and was put in prison, whilst her children went to the workhouse. Is there any way to view prison records or to find out what happened to her ?
Many thanks in anticipation - Claire

What was her name. Another site has the criminal records listed and I can take a look.

Thank you for you quick response - her married name was Elizabeth Aubrey she was born in Wappenham Northants about 1796 and according to the 1851 census was a prisoner in St Giles Square County Gaol, Northamptonshire... (I hope it wasn't too bad !!) Thanks again, Claire

You're welcome. It may just be a matter of time. I can't find anything listed for Northampton so maybe that County hasn't been transcribed yet.
It may just appear later as they update it.

Mmm. Not sure about this. What makes you think he was imprisoned?
Did he live in Sussex all of his life?
There are loads of John Humprey's
One born 1812 was acquitted in Hertfordshire of .................. Breaking??
Can you give me any more details. Have you tracked him through the census records?

I have traced him on census. Someone did part of this tree a good few years ago and in their notes it had that John was imprisoned. But didnt say when or what for.
In 1861 he was a parish clerk and he was married to Ann.
As far as I know he always lived in bosham Sussex though his place of birth is sindon? sussex
That is all I have sorry
Thankyou Jayne

This appears to be the only one for Sussex.

John Humphreys
Date of Trial: 29 Oct 1855
Trial Year: 1855
Location of Trial: Sussex, England
Sentence: Imprisonment

There were two offences and both appear to have been tried on the same day.
The first was for Larceny for which he received one months hard labour. The second was for Housebreaking and Larceny and received a sentence of 4 years penal servitude to begin at the completion of the first sentence.

There is no birth date given unfortunately so whether it is yours or not I just don't know
