I suggested to Elizabeth that she post this as a request for German speaker to look at her threas. The intention is not to be a duplicate research thread but to point to thread quoted above. Please post answers on that thread.

There have been sugestions why he might have changed his name. The fact that he was German may be considered a reason but Hagar also sounds German,

I wondered if Eckhart or echeho said by a german with a gutterall ech may be heard by an englishman as hagar? Or even if the name was originally Hagar and heard as echeho by an earlier recordkeeper? There are a handful of echeho on family search but lots og Hagars.

We dont have a definate date... We got 1842.. but it could be 1850? His first born was 1876 a hanah Hagar

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Vauxhall/stmartin/baptisms_Hindx.html

He also had lydia hagar on the above list.. the years before that it was hit and miss if they got the spelling right
If you look under eckho on the above list you will see its the same mum and dad but with a different name. The link is 32 Benledi St and john and mary ellen..

any good?? or any ideas all welcome!

Hello everyone.

I have come over here to ask if anyone has any knowledge of the above surnames and how you would pernouce them? I have a relative who was a Johan Eckhart and changed his name to John Hagar. We cannot find the famil in the 1901 censsus.

Can you take a little look at my following thread? any suggestions?
