You won't get witness names etc on a marriage record from 1741. That requirement only came in with the Hardwicke Marriage Act of 1753. Prior to that date, you will most probably only get the date of the marriage and the names of the bride & groom ( i.e. no more than is on the IGI).

I can search the IGI at:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

This time, I want to use the batch # p005702 to limit my search to the baptismal register from Chorley LAN for one block of time.
I can get a partal list of batch #s from:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

Results for: Lancashire, England, British Isles

These are all OPR (Old Parish Register) extracts -if I click on, say, Henry, I don't really see any more info. I do see:

So why are they called extracts - well they don't show the full baptismal record - just the parent and kid's names, and the dates and place - well, not really the place of the marr, but rather the place where the register's kept.
(There's not much difference in England, but in Scotland marriages occur all over the place.)

Here's Henry's full record:
Baptism: 20 Oct 1833 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Henry Whittle - Son of John Whittle & Jane
Abode: Chorley
Occupation: Timber merchant
Baptised by: J.S. Master Curate
Register: Baptisms 1828 - 1836, Page 202, Entry 1614
Source: LDS Film 93704

Thanks everyone for your comments. This is the first time that I have used this facility so have much to learn.

mgnv - What are OPR exctracts and how do I access these?

Thanks again.

One marriage record that I have, taken from the parish record, from about 1825 has the names of 2 witnesses

and the same 2 names are on the other 2 marriage records on the same page.

I have been told that they were sometimes known as professional witnesses! They could have been officials of the church (eg parish clerk) .... or men who made a bit of an income by witnessing weddings!

Not much help in tracing other members of my gt grandparents' families!

Lou,

You don't need to put stars instead of dots in a web address any more. Genes made it possible for web addresses to be typed correctly quite a few years ago.

Hi Ronald on my marriage records for 1788 all that is present is the bridal couples names and the witness;s one of which must have been a clerk or something as his name is on every other marriage record. On my record it doesn't even give their ages.

Lou

PS If it's a marriage in Lancashire try this site it's brilliant and www*lan-opc*org*uk give you more than just the bridal couples name it's brilliant. Replace .* with a .

"...as it is obvious that details shown in IGI records are someone's best guess" - well, yes and no. It looks like their birth info is guessed, but the kids showing on the "family" link do have OPR extracts under j/k135621.

As to what info I can expect from their marr record, I'ld expect nothing useful. However, you might get lucky - you can't really tell. E.g., it might show one or both were from the parish of Fordingbridge - it might name parent(s) - who knows.

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Aug 2009 06:38

If you are lucky you might get the name of one or both fathers.

But most of the ones I have seen in Pallet's list have just had the names of the bride and groom.

Can anyone tell me what information I can expect to find on records of a marriage in 1741. From IGI I have details for the marriage of Richard Ranger to Elizabeth Cox, dated 12/07/1741, at Amport in Hampshire. Confirmation of this can be found in Phillimores Vol 2, page 129.

I'm trying to establish place of birth and any any information relating to both Richard and Elizabeth as it is obvious that details shown in IGI records are someone's best guess. If I go to the bother and expense of getting copies of any records are they likely to provide the information I am seeking?

There are records for the birth of both a Richard Ranger and an Elizabeth Cox at Fordingbridge but they may not be the ones I'm looking for.
