Pauline,

No, you are not thick. Just take things step by step and don't be put off by the geeks.

Thanks for all the info. I have appeared to download onto my email and saved it and am now waiting for my grandson to take me further. Thanks again.

It opened in Wordpad because that's the program your computer has associated with that type of file, a gedcom is a text file so this is normal, you need to change the file association so that your computer opens that type of file with the program you want it to.

Right click on the gedcom file icon, select from the list that opens, PAF, if it's not listed Browse for it, select it and tick the box where it says "always use this program to open this type of file"

Job done.

Hi Pauiline.. In answer to your original question....! ignore the rest - just go to the end.....!

""""I've exported my GR tree and I have the PAF program. How do I view it in PAF? I went on there and clicked on import and managed to view a strange thing in notepad and now I'm confused =S"

Ok So am I.
Went on where PAF? or the PAF install file that you downloaded.
Why (and how) did you start Notepad, and what file did you open with it?
Where is the .ged file from GR stored? And what is it called?

EDIT. Was the strange thing the error report?
GR is pretty poor at generating a gedcom, and I had forgotten quite how bad PAF is a reading one! It does not understand many of the standard tags at all."""

PS: Sorry if there are tooo many or too few quotes.....!

Hi agaIn Pauline,

Still here?
Just download your file from GR. Copy onto your CD - job done.

Where is your tree now? Do you mean the one on GR? If so then go to the bottom of the page and click on Import / Export gedcom.

Follow the instructions for export and GR will email the gedcom file to your nominated email account as an attachment.

You can copy this to CD or load it into a tree program such as FTM

Yes you can, but only in GEDCOM format that you will need an offline reader to open.

If you go to the bottom of the page, click on "Import/Export Gedcom" and it will e-mail you the file.
