I think the answer is that it varies.

My experience is that both previous married name and maiden name is on the certificate, but this is not always the case. The GRO Index will only record the last name.

Try to corroborate with other information. Look at the census returns, check ages, Most women married in their early 20's. An older marriage might indicate it was a second one, so look for a death of an earlier spouse.

My mums paternal gran was married 3 times her third marriage in 1900 shows her in her current married name with no ref to the first husband, Her dads name is on all three marriage certs so this shows what her maiden name was. If you didnt know she had been married three times you wouldn't be aware from her 3rd marriage cert.
Fortunately my grandfather was a child of her fisrt marriage so we are able to follow it through

Some give previous names and some dont. My grandmother only gave her previous married name.

However I have seen on local reg sites 2 female names. Same first name but different surnames. No set rules it seems

If you are talking about an England or Wales marriage certificate, then it will not generally show a woman's previous names, only her surname at the time of marriage (which will of course be her previous married surname if she was a widow). However, you should be able to infer her maiden name from her father's surname, which should be given on the certificate.

The certificate should say Late SMITH formerly BROWN under wifes name.

Andrew Report 12 Aug 2009 19:44

The info should be on the marriage cert, but not ancestry. I have one family member on her third marriage and the cert lists all her previous names.

EDIT sometimes pevious names are on the quarterley lists, if you know when she married for the second time, it might be worth a look
