this might sound a bit daft but i am wondering if the general public can look at these records in person rather than keep sending away for the information (as for the birth marriage and death certs it is getting rather expensive) does anyone know?

for bmd certificates you can only look at the indexes, to get the information that is on the certificate you have to pay, £7 a pop via the GRO

if you know the church where the baptism (often some time after the birth), marriage or burial took place, you may find their records on microfilm at the local records office / library, or recent ones may still be held in the church and the vicar may let you view them

What area are you interested in? There are some registers online, but not many.
