Evacuees

Hi Madmeg.
I searched for Evacuees on this site as my mum has just phoned me. I let her borrow a book I have just read called 'Don't forget to Write'.
Mum who is 82 remembers the evacuees from Manchester coming to our village during the war. She remembers one boy lived down the same street as her.
The village children went to school in the mornings and the evacueed children in the afternoon; they even brought their head teacher with them.
Maybe the book will prompt more memories for her.
The evacuee she remembers was called Jim Dooley from Manchester
Best wishes Joan

The local heritage centre has given me the email address of the fella who organised the visit last year. Waiting to hear from him. They reckon he has a list of all the evacuees.

Will keep you informed.

Incidentally, read one report which said the lady of the house taught the girl to cook and how to knit. My grandma's skill would have been crochet - she taught me, and I crocheted my daughter's christening robes. Thanks Grandma.

Love to all

Playing around on google I found an article about a group of ex-refugees from Lowestoft, visiting Glossop as part of their annual reunion, and I suddenly remembered mum's pair were from Lowestoft! The article gave some names and I have written to one, also contacted the newspaper.

Maybe contacting other people who were in the same year at that school would help too, they may know more details.

Good idea Gwyn. The local school was only yards away, and I know it!

Thanks

School admission books might show them at your grandmother's address.
Some areas have a closure on the logs for X number of years, but I have also seen some shown openly in museum wartime displays.

Hi LIndsey,

Yes lots, thanks, but they all seem to be just general info sites, and not lists of people. Wish I could remember their names - I have been told.

My grandmother had two children as evacuees in WW2, I think a brother and sister. Is there any website or other source that might give details?
