Thanks Helen and Pat.

I am not sure that Ann was illegitimate I am assuming so because I can only see her mother's name on documents and not her father.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment.

KInd regards

There are Kirk Sessions. I believe that sometimes illegitimate births were recorded there and the father could be brought before the panel.
I,m sure someone on here will know a lot more on this than myself.

As Ann was born pre 1855 her birth would not need to be registered or noted in any way.

Likewise, because she was illigitimate, the chances of her being baptised and records being availble are minimal. Not always the case ... but probable.

Thanks Ann,

As in my first post I have traced all her children and their marriages and deaths etc, and Ann & Robert's deaths, it is just anything before Ann's marriage to Robert I cannot locate.

Thanks anyway for looking.

Guess I'll just have to chalk it up to a dead end on this line.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for the parents of Ann Guthrie born between 1812 and 1816 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire.

I can trace from Ann’s marriage in 1831 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire to Robert Boyd through all of her children’s births and deaths to her own death in 1900 in Dalry, Ayr but nothing before her marriage date.

Ann’s death certificate states that her parents were Unknown Guthrie and Ann Cowan. In searching Scotland’s People there is a marriage record in 1834 in Maybole, Ayr for an Archibald Guthrie and Ann Cowan but this is quite some time on from Ann’s birth so I am not sure if it is the correct one.

I have not been able to trace a birth or baptismal record for Ann under the names of Guthrie or Cowan with a matching mother of Ann or in Kilwinning Ayrshire on Scotland's People. If however I use the LDS site, it tells me that Ann was born circa 1815 to Ann Cowan, no father is mentioned which I can only assume they have worked out from census returns and her death certificate.

Not sure if anyone else can have any luck. I have tried a number of sites and no joy there either.

Would a birth in 1815 have to be registered if it was possibly illegitimate, I'm not sure if this is the case but it may well be.

Thanks

Rachelle
