Could it also be that there was a mix up in the records between the registry office/church and the main registration office.

I've been transcribing records for 1942 this morning and there are females coming up with alternative spouse names for their grooms

eg

Da..... Fanny ........ Godfrey or Gilbert....... Marylebone..... 1a 1271

In fact there was even more confusion as the same reference number is used for

Da... Faye.....Godfrey or Gilbert....... Marylebone..... 1a 1271

She could have been married before - when I looked up my grandparents' marriage, it listed Grandad (William E Siggs) as having a wife named "Briggs or Rowland". Rowland was her maiden name but she had been married to a Mr. Briggs - on the marriage certificate, under "condition" she called herself "the divorced wife of Clarence Briggs".

it would be because she was previously known by both names.
one example could be a child whose birth is registered to an unmarried couple but when both parents names are on the cert so the child could be known by either surname.if you search for the birth by each surname you come up with the same GRO ref.
The marriage cert will tell you the reason for the two names

I am researching marriages for john Pickering during ww2.
I came across one:
1941 John Pickering married Rosina D Ross or Ewart.
I looked up Rosina Ross and Rosina Ewart, and they both have the same record number 11a - 3595.
Why would there be 2 names, is it because she was married before? One name was her maiden name?
