Christening record

I have found a christening record on Ancestry.com that may be relevant to my family tree. I can't see the original record online however. The citation reads : Place: Westminster, Collection: St James, Date range 1723-1786. Film number 1042308. Does anyone know where I could see the original records and does anyone have any idea whether or not they would contain more than just mother and father's name and child's name and DOB?

Try going on www.familysearch.org
Select search records
then do international Genealogical Search

Put what info you have got in there and see what comes up.

I went back 100 years thanks to the website.

The original records for St James are held at the Westminster Archives in London........information on baptism records varies, as well as parents names and childs you sometimes get an address {road or place name] and occupation of father, but not always.

Have you checked to see if the records are available from the LDS site to veiw at you local LDS centre.? EDIT....sorry ,see you`ve already tried that.

Nicky - what Jennifer checked was the batch #s. Most films have not been extracted to the IGI, and this is true of the several St James's registers found in the LDS library catalog

I phoned the Westminster Archives and they said I should come and check their records myself. I'm going to have to go up there and just hope that ,if I find the certificate, it will carry some clues that will alllow me to identify my ancestor! Don't you love genealogy?

I`ve visited Westminster Archives myself a couple of times...its about a fifteen minute walk from Victoria station...staff very helpful, and all Parish records on microfilm, some with surname index so you don`t have to trail through pages and pages.

Have fun

As you said - the staff were very helpful but the christening record was not. It didn't say any more than the ancestry.com record i.e names of parents and baby -dates of birth and christening. Oh well - i had a nice day in London!

Sorry to hear you didn`t get the info you wanted Jennifer.......

but thats the problem, sometimes the info is very basic, it really does vary from parish to parish ,vicar to vicar, but hopefully you managed to find other useful stuff while you were there...

I've just reread Jennifer's initial post - here's what I should have said first off, just in case it happens again.
Note Jennifer's post mentions "Film number 1042308"

Go to family search and in the blue bar at top click on advanced search - library catalog and do a Film Search for 1042308, then drill down
