Janet...Children were admitted to the "workhouse" alone...they went to the childrens section along with all the other children who had family or not...(those children were separated on admission from their family)

Janet she could have been 'Boarded Out' and could be anywhere in the country.

They did this for very young children sometimes, a bit like a Foster Home. I have a 10yr old born Caythorpe Lincolnshire down in Hampshire in 1891, a long way from home, after both her parents died

Thanks for that Shirley. The only thing for me is that these girls were 12 & 14, whereas the child I am looking at was just 7. Would that make a difference do you think?

I have two children aged 12 & 14 in the workhouse in 1871 but their mum was still alive, she worked as a monthly nurse so wouldnt be able to have the girls with her as she would live in with the new mum for every employment. She did eventually provide a home for them again

A quick query.
Does anyone know please if in 1841children might be in a workhouse without family members or would they have been in an orphanage?
Any views much appreciated.
Thank you.
