Mrs Grumpy (sometimes 525837)
Thank you for that, I had thought it was similar to that, I also think our other two friends (Porkie Pie and Rutland Belle) are spot on too. I knew someone would be able to help :o)
Best wishes,
Caroline.

Thank you Porkie Pie and Rutland Belle for your very quick replies. Just one more thing would a Scavenger on vestry be the same thing throughout the country, mine was in London.
Kind regards,
Caroline.

One of mine was a vestry labourer. I think vestry is the old term for an area - around the parish church, the old parish boundary maybe. I did try reading up on it once and it is very confusing. Be interested to see if there is someone out there who can explain it to both of us!

According to my dictionary of trades (Colin Waters) a scavenger is a "rubbish collector / nightsoil man".

Hi All,
I knew that my Great, Great Grandfather was a "scavenger" (not the type that would have worked in a wool / cotton mill). On the 1901 census he is listed as a "scavenger on vestry" - any ideas please? Vestry is something to do with churches?
Thanking you all in advance,
Caroline.
