Hi

I have failed to find my great granddad who was in the merchant navy.
I know he was abroad because my great grandma mentioned on the census that the head of the household was abroad on a ship as a fireman(stoker)

I'm not asking anyone to search for me as i know its pay as you go and i have already searched all avenues and used all name variants. My question is: Has anyone had problems finding merchant seaman who are abroad on the 1911 census?
I just want to know if its a case of missing records or i am unlucky.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark, can't really help you i'm afraid, but i did find this.

From 1851 to 1921 the enumeration of those aboard ships was restricted to vessels in port on census night and vessels which arrived during the following day.

Thanks Netty and Paul.

I can assume in was not in port, its a bit annoying because i waited about 6 months for oversea records to come on the 1911 census and was disappointed not to find him.
I have his index card and know which ship he was on in 1918 but the index card does not give names of ships,

I will try the addresses you supplied me

Overseas Royal Navy are certainly on the 1911 as I found someone the other day, Not sure why Merchant Navy wouldn't be.

Have you tried an advanced search on the 1911 census?.

I found my grandfather who was not at home with his parents. I used a variant name and also his occupation.

I found him in another town with an S added to the end of his name. I knew it was him because after he married he went to live in the same town and I was born there

Thanks everyone for your advice.

All i can assume is that my great granddads Captain/Master who should of been responsible for filling in the form has either forgot to add him or he has totally misspelt his name, his surname is DAVIs and i have done every variant including DAVIES,DAVIE,DAVY etc.
